ACLU President Deborah Archer joins ºìÌÒÊÓƵ Dean Tamara F. Lawson to discuss defending democracy, civil liberties, and civil rights in a divided nation. As a public institution, the UW is committed to educating and informing our community and upholding our democracy. This event was made possible in conjunction with the Provost’s Office.

Speakers

Deborah N. Archer is President of the American Civil Liberties Union and a leading expert in civil rights, civil liberties and racial justice. She is Associate Dean for Experiential Education and Clinical Programs, the Margaret B. Hoppin Professor of Clinical Law and Faculty Director of the Community Equity Lab at New York University School of Law. She is an award-winning teacher and legal scholar whose articles have appeared in leading law reviews. Deborah has also offered commentary for numerous media outlets, including MSNBC, National Public Radio, CBS, Monocle, The Atlantic and The New York Times.

Tamara F. Lawson is the Toni Rembe Dean and Professor of Law at the ºìÌÒÊÓƵ. Lauded for her scholarship, teaching and public service, Lawson was recognized with an AALS Clyde Ferguson Award (2023). She holds leadership positions in the Association of American Law Schools (AALS), Law School Admissions Council (LSAC), Society of American Law Teachers (SALT) and National Bar Association (NBA). She has garnered media citations for her expertise in criminal law and was selected as the Reporter for the American Bar Association’s National Task Force on Stand Your Ground Laws.
