This week’s “Got a Minute?” interview is with Jack Dorsey, 2L.
Ƶ: What's the first class you ever took in law school?
Jack Dorsey (JD): Civil procedure with Professor Feldman.
Ƶ: What was the first case you were cold called on?
JD: I think it may have been Pennoyer v. Neff in civ pro as well.
Ƶ: How did it go?
JD: The language was very difficult to follow, but I got through it in the end, so it worked out.
Ƶ: Who was the first classmate you met?
JD: I think it was Kate Lowry.
Ƶ: Which professor would you want on your staff if you were to set up an operating government on the moon?
JD: Oh, Professor Manheim. 100%
Ƶ: What's your favorite doctrinal class?
JD: I enjoyed the readings for torts a lot. Obviously, a lot’s happening in those cases. So, I'd say those were the most fun to read.
Ƶ: Which classroom is better, room 133 or 138?
JD: 138.
Ƶ: If you had to pair up with a professor for karaoke, who would you pull up on stage with you?
JD: Oh, Professor Ziff. He's fun. I like Professor Ziff a lot, so I think it'd be a good time.
Ƶ: What's the address of the building?
JD: [Laughs] I don’t know.
Ƶ: Where's your favorite part of the library to hangout?
JD: Oh, I'm a basement dweller. I enjoy minimal distractions and no people walking around. So, bottom floor, I think it's the best.
Ƶ: What's the best underutilized resource at Ƶ for students?
JD: I really enjoyed the programs the 2Ls and 3Ls put on for us, like the Academic Success Program. A good number of people use them, but definitely not our whole class. So, I found them really helpful as a 1L.
Ƶ: Name the first Latin legal term that comes to mind and what it means.
JD: Oh, my goodness. Amici, friend of the court.
Ƶ: Which class have you laughed the most in?
JD: I had torts with Professor Porter. She's pretty funny. I also had Professor Mills for property, and I have him right now for Indian law too. He's also quite funny.
Ƶ: Where’s your favorite spot on the UW campus, excluding William H. Gates Hall?
JD: Probably Red Square. I went there for College Game Day last year for the Oregon game. That was a great experience. It was really cool. And then just the main drive along Memorial Way too — right before you get to the law school — it’s just beautiful.
Ƶ: Do you have a favorite courtroom drama TV show or movie?
JD: Not going to lie, I don't. I was never really into court dramas or anything like that. I just kind of, you know, was really attracted to the law through people I know, and just all the possibilities that are afforded in the profession.
Ƶ: Tell us something you learned in class that blew your mind.
JD: I think just how complex civil procedure really is. Coming into law school, you don't really think about all the stuff that really happens in the background and all the problems, all the processes that are necessary to kind of make everything work. And so I think as a first class, just learning about the real fundamentals and seeing everything behind the scenes, it just shed a lot of light on my understanding of the legal process.
Ƶ: What's your favorite timeslot for a class?
JD: Oh, I'm big into 10:30 to 12:20. It’s perfect.
Ƶ: Where’s your favorite spot to get a bite of food nearby?
JD: Ooh. I don't necessarily have a favorite one. I love Starbucks. I'm a big Starbucks guy. So, any of the Starbucks locations. Also, Off the Rez is great. I really like their fried bread; it's very good there.
Ƶ: If you could host a fireside chat with one professor on anything, who would it be, and on what?
JD: I haven't taken her class yet, but I believe Professor Manheim does election law. I'd love to hear more about that. Just, kind of, hear her opinions on the last few years, and what she foresees happening in the future.
Ƶ: If you could work in-house anywhere, where would it be?
JD: Growing up, I was a big gamer, so I think a gaming company would be very interesting. Just because of all the different conglomerations under them, I think Microsoft would be really cool.
