Always Something Brewing

Matt Lincecum, J.D. ‘03, began his career in beverage and hospitality law but took a detour to pursue something a little more hands-on: founding and owning his own brewery.
was built with a love for Seattle and the motivation to prove that great beer can be made with the finest local ingredients. It was created in the midst of the Great Recession, proof that it was an act of passion.
With four locations, three in Fremont and one in Columbia City, the bustle and atmosphere of Seattle fills the brewery with community, company and — of course — high-quality beer. According to Fremont Brewing, “We brew small-batch artisan beers for your life’s adventures, made with the best local ingredients.”
Before opening the brewery in 2009, Lincecum had a strong foundation as an environmentalist, community organizer and home brewer. He followed these passions in pursuit of a J.D., and as an attorney, began helping others live out their dreams of owning a bar or restaurant.
Sara Nelson, who earned a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology at UW, joined the project as Co-Founder and Co-Owner. Nelson originally left academia for a career in public service and served as policy advisor for the Seattle City Council. Creating their dream team, Nelson helped Lincecum to lead the company’s sustainability efforts and external relations.
Lincecum and Nelson are heavily involved with the Seattle community, holding leadership positions that advance the issues of craft beer, small businesses and the manufacturing sector. They have also completed partnerships with companies like Pink Boots Society, which empowers women beer professionals. Their Homefront IPA, made in collaboration with baseball teams and other breweries, has raised over $700,000 for various veterans’ organizations.
