The 2022 Innovative Justice Speaker Series is a lunch hour program on three Wednesdays during fall quarter featuring lawyers working on innovative social justice programs. This season’s programs feature three well-known and dynamic lawyers, each responsible for cutting-edge initiatives in innovative justice and social justice.

Programs will run from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m. and include time for student questions. Students should feel free to bring a brown bag lunch to eat during the hour.

Roger Rogoff (J.D. ’93)

Roger Rogoff (J.D. ’93) is a former Superior Court judge who Gov. Jay Inslee appointed in 2022 as the director of Washington’s newly created Office of Independent Investigations where he will oversee the agency’s investigations into allegations of excessive use of force by law enforcement officers across Washington. Before assuming his new position, Mr. Rogoff worked as a prosecutor on the state and federal levels, a defense attorney, and as a judge on the King County Superior Court. He also served on the Criminal Justice Reform Task Force and the Sentencing Guidelines Commission.

La Rond Baker (J.D. ’10)

La Rond Baker (J.D. ’10) is Legal Director at the ACLU of Washington, where she started her career. She is responsible for directing legal work on a wide range of cases and issues including voting rights, immigration, speech, race, gender, sexual orientation, and law enforcement use of force. Before returning to the ACLU, she worked in the Civil Rights Division of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office and as Special Counsel for Affirmative Action and Policy in the King County Department of Public Defense.

Nicholas Brown

Appointed by President Biden in 2021 as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington, Nicholas Brown is responsible for federal criminal prosecutions and representation of the federal government in civil matters. He served from 2007 to 2013 as an Assistant United States Attorney in Western Washington, handling a wide variety of criminal cases. From 2013 to 2017, U.S. Attorney Brown served as General Counsel to Gov. Jay Inslee.  Most recently U.S. Attorney Brown was a partner with Pacifica Law Group in Seattle. He is an Army veteran who was awarded the Bronze Star Medal in 2005. A Western Washington native, Brown completed his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2002.
