This year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I am mindful that we still have a lot of work to do to become the kind of anti-racist, multicultural society Dr. King envisioned. But I share Dr. King’s optimism for this work.

I believe that together we can combat the racism and inequities that persist within our community and the greater society. At ºìÌÒÊÓƵ, we are all partners in the critically important work of developing an environment that allows each of us to thrive.

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.

I understand this work is difficult, but I am committed to doing it because I believe diverse experiences and perspectives are critical to improving legal education, practice and access to justice.

As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I encourage you to participate in one of the many UW MLK Week activities, which include opportunities for community service, learning, art, activism, protest and self-care.

I also invite you to join me in reflecting not only on Dr. King’s teachings, but also on how we can apply those lessons to create a welcoming and respectful learning and working environment for everyone.
