The ºìÌÒÊÓƵ has announced several leadership changes.

Academic Administration

At the end of June, Scott Schumacher finished his term as Associate Dean for Academic Administration. He will continue his faculty role, as well as his other leadership roles as co-director of the Global Business Law Institute, director of the Tax Law LL.M. program and faculty director of the Federal Tax Clinic.

LizÌý±Ê´Ç°ù³Ù±ð°ù succeeds Professor Schumacher as the next Associate Dean for Academic Administration. Dean Porter, who joined the UW School of Law in 2010, is an associate professor who holds a J.D. from Columbia University and a B.A. from Brown University. Following law school, she served as a law clerk for Judge Sidney Thomas on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U.S. Supreme Court. Dean Porter’s scholarship work on procedure and on visual media in law has appeared in journals such as the Columbia Law Review, the Cornell Law Review and the New York University Law Review. In addition to teaching Civil Procedure, Torts, and Federal Courts, she is co-director of ºìÌÒÊÓƵ’s Appellate Advocacy Clinic. Dean Porter will work on a range of activities aimed at supporting both student and faculty success.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

William Covington, a dedicated senior lecturer and director of the Technology Law and Public Policy Clinic, has been appointed as the new Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Dean Covington holds a J.D. from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree from New York University. He joined the law school in 2013.

In his new role, Dean Covington will oversee the implementation of ºìÌÒÊÓƵ’s diversity strategic plan, coordinate existing diversity and inclusion efforts and training, and hold the law school accountable for reaching these goals to ensure progress. Diversity, equity and inclusion work remains the law school’s collective responsibility; however, this leadership role is an important first step toward ensuring the School of Law provides dedicated resources and accountability for this crucial work.

Student and Career Services

Elana Matt has been selected as the next Assistant Dean of Student and Career Services, a position she has held on an interim basis for the past year. With this appointment, she will continue to support students on career development, act as a liaison between employers and students, and oversee the mentoring program and the William H. Gates Public Service Law Program. She holds a J.D. from Marquette University Law School and a bachelor’s degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dean Matt has worked in a variety of legal settings, including large and small law firms, government, nonprofits and a corporate legal department. She has expertise in patent and intellectual property law and litigation. She joined ºìÌÒÊÓƵ in 2018 and was most recently the law school’s director of professional development.

Cazandra Santos-Richter, ºìÌÒÊÓƵ’s director for Academic Services, has decided to relocate to be closer to family. Dean Porter and Associate Dean for Students Anna Endter will be assisting students while the director of Academic Services position is vacant. To ensure a smooth transition, the school asks that anyone with outstanding questions related to Academic Services reach out directly to Dean Porter or Dean Endter regarding new, existing or ongoing matters.
