Faculty and Staff

Karen Boxx, University of Washington Professor of Law, was named a 2019 Washington Super Lawyer by Keller Rohrback LLP.

Justice Sonya Sotomayor cited work by Mary Fan, University of Washington Henry M. Jackson Endowed Professor of Law, in a dissenting opinion in the U.S. Supreme Court case Nieves v. Bartlett.

Justice Neil Gorsuch cited a work co-authored by Sanne Knudsen, University of Washington Stimson Bullitt Professor of Environmental Law, in a concurring opinion in the U.S. Supreme Court case Kisor v. Wilkie.

Recent work by Hugh Spitzer, University of Washington Professor of Law, was cited in the Washington State Supreme Court case Karstetter v. King County Corrections Guild.


Students

This summer, 32 students received prestigious public interest law fellowships supporting summer work that promotes equitable access to justice for underrepresented communities.

Jeef Chandra 2L was an honored scholarship recipient at the South Asian Bar Association’s 2019 Annual Banquet.

Christine Minhee '19 was awarded a national Soros Justice Fellowship and is the second ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ student to become a Soros Scholar. Christine was also one of this year’s two Dean’s Medalists.


Class Notes

The Ocean Shores City Council approved the hiring of Scott R. Anderson ’04 as city administrator.

Mohamed Rali Badissy ‘06 — who graduated from ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ with high honors, Order of the Coif and Order of the Barristers — joined Penn State Dickinson Law as an assistant professor of law.

Murat Cengizlier LL.M. ‘18 earned and began an internship at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot appointed Maurice Classen ‘04, former director of strategy for the Chicago Police Department who before lectured at ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ, as her new chief of staff.

Jessica M. DeMarois LL.M. ‘12 joined Goodrich & Reely, PLLC as an associate attorney.

The Groves Law Office, founded by Laura and Travis Groves ’03, was awarded the Pro Bono and Public Service Award – Group at the Washington State Bar Association’s 2019 APEX Awards.

Aman Gebru LL.M. ’12 joined the full-time faculty at Duquesne University School of Law as assistant professor of law.

Abdulaziz Al Hamoudi Ph.D ‘14 joined Al-Yamamah University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as dean of the university’s law school.

Longtime Friday Harbor attorney Carla J. Higginson ‘79 was elected to the Washington State Bar Association Board of Governors.

Daniel Jablonsky ’99 was appointed president and CEO of Maxar Technologies.

Cannabis information resource company Leafly has hired Yoko Miyashita ‘01 as the company’s first general counsel.

King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg ‘85 was profiled in and for Seattle’s pioneering efforts to decriminalize drug offenses.

Scott Scherer ‘84 signed on as shareholder of the firm Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck’s internationally recognized gaming practice.

Theodore Shaw ’18 was awarded a E. Barrett Prettyman and Stuart Stiller Fellowship from Georgetown Law.

Sofia Sheppard ‘05, associate general counsel and head of global licensing and business development for Spotify, was named as one of Billboard’s 2019 “Top Music Lawyers.â€

Gov. Jay Inslee appointed David J. Whedbee ‘04 and Josephine A. Wiggs-Martin ‘04 to the King County Superior Court.


In Memoriam

George Edensword-Breck ’71 was an attorney who practiced in Seattle and Bainbridge Island specializing in estate planning, trusts and guardianships. He died at age 72.

Alice Nyambura Mbatia ’17 was a graduate of the University of Washington’s Sustainable International Development program. She died at age 44.

Charles F. Warner ’47 was a World War II veteran and founding partner of The Walthew Law firm. He served in the D-Day invasion and was awarded a bronze star, six gold stars and a presidential unit citation before beginning his legal career. He died at age 100.
