Participant Responsibilities
LRAP recipients are required to re-establish eligibility each year by submitting documentation showing that they still meet the LRAP eligibility requirements.
Any change in employment, salary, or loan status, must be promptly reported to the LRAP program in writing within 30 days by emailing Travis Pietila at tpietila@uw.edu. Examples of a change in conditions that warrant reporting to the LRAP program include, but are not limited to:
- Going into deferment or forbearance status on loans included on your LRAP application.
- Receiving a salary increase that may affect eligibility under the currently applicable salary cap.
- Leaving one's job.
The LRAP Selection Committee will consider hardship issues on a case-by-case basis. Examples of such circumstances include, but are not limited to, family leave, medical leave, illness or disability, and loss of employment.
Default
Participants who do not fulfill the public service commitment (and have not been excused for hardship reasons) will be required to pay back any loans that have not yet been forgiven. Under the program, the first loan (for year one) will be forgiven after completing two years of qualifying employment and the additional two loans (for years two and three) will be forgiven after the applicant completes three years of qualifying employment. For example, a person who leaves public service employment after 1 and ½ years would be required to pay back $10,000 (the loans for years one and two). A person who leaves after 2 years would only be required to pay back $5,000 (the loan for year two, with the loan for year one being forgiven after completing two years of employment).
