Adelante Pro Bono Project
The Adelante Pro Bono Project provides students an opportunity to engage in substantive humanitarian immigration law and policy work with some of the most vulnerable populations, including asylum seekers at鈥攁nd on the other side of鈥攐ur southern border. Adelante鈥檚 current focus includes the 鈥淩emain in Mexico鈥 policy that forces asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while pursuing their asylum claims in U.S. immigration courts, the Title 42 emergency health order that has effectively closed the border to asylum seekers, and Family Separation. .
On February 23, 2021, Adelante released a report, Locked in Limbo: The Urgent Need to Fully Dismantle 鈥淩emain in Mexico鈥 and Rapidly Process Vulnerable People into the United States. The report, authored by Adelante students Isabel M. Skilton (LAW 鈥22), Cassandra E. Baker (LAW 鈥22), Michelle Browne (Law 鈥22) and Director Haiyun Damon-Feng, highlights the stories of vulnerable families鈥攊ncluding those with children suffering from epilepsy, cardiac conditions, vision loss and severe trauma following sexual assault in Mexico鈥攚ho remain trapped in the cruel and inhumane conditions of 鈥淩emain in Mexico鈥 despite the recent announcement of policies intended to wind down the program. The report urges the government to use readily available means to rapidly process people into the United States.
