Externships Academic and Financial Considerations
Externship credits are charged at the same rate as for other law school courses. As such, it can be advantageous to either do a full time externship or combine them with other law school classes to get the most for your tuition. The  can help with calculation.
Graduation Requirement and Credit Information
- Students may earn 1 academic credit for each 30 hours of work. Chart below.
- Externships have a 2 credit minimum. 60+ hours are required for every externship.Â
- The 9 credit can be satisfied by an externship.
- Public Service externships of 2+ credits may satisfy the Public Service Requirement for graduation. You are responsible to confirm if they meet all .
- Note: Public service and experiential can’t overlap. You need 2 public service and 9 Experiential. 11 total in these areas.
- Maximum of 18 credits* total for externships and non-law courses.Â
- *For-profit (corporate counsel/small firm) externships are limited to a minimum of 4 and maximum of 6 credits total.Â
- You may request a lower number of credits than your proposed hours warrant.
- Externships and Seminar are credit/no credit (Keep in mind limits related to opportunity for )
- B567, the externship seminar, is a separate 2-credit course, which is not included in the hourly requirement and does not count against the externship/non-law credit cap.
- Hours are not rounded up and no partial credits are awarded. If you do not complete the required number of externship work hours for the number of enrolled credits, your credits will be reduced. You must complete a minimum of 60 hours per externship.
- When thinking about the timing of your externship, keep in mind that you can apply for after your second year which may give you a more substantive experience.
